The BCRA issued a silver coin for the 22nd edition of the Cup to be held in November and December 2022.

Within the framework of the Programs of Football World Cup Commemorative Coins, the BCRA has issued a silver coin to celebrate the World Cup Qatar. This coin commemorates the 22nd edition of the World Cup that will be staged in November and December 2022 in Qatar. The BCRA took part in World Cup coin programs minting coins for Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Russia 2018.

The obverse of the 2022 Qatar coin displays at the center the allegory of a decisive moment, the starting point for the ball to fulfill the dream of scoring a goal, as explained by the design team. The right edge reads “REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA” (“ARGENTINE REPUBLIC”).

The reverse shows number 5, which represents the number on the back of a football shirt, and the net of the goal on top of it. Below number 5 is the word “PESOS”, and the upper edge reads “COPA MUNDIAL DE LA FIFA CATAR 2022TM” (“FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022 TM”). The exergue contains the year of coinage, “2021”.

The coin is made of silver 925, has a face value of 5 pesos, a diameter of 40 mm and a reeded edge, and weighs 27 grams. The presentation includes: case, acrylic capsule, and certificate of authenticity.

The issuance for the domestic market will be 2,500 units, minted by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Spanish Mint).

This issuance also includes gold coins that will be sold abroad.

The BCRA’s Treasury Strategic Planning Management Office—Numismatic Issuances Deputy Management Office—was in charge of the design, which is similar in both metals.
