BCRA participation in Mercosur

BCRA participation in Mercosur

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) participates in various regional integration instances within Mercosur. Its involvement takes place mainly in macroeconomic coordination settings and in technical forums linked to financial integration, regulatory harmonization, and the exchange of information among the States Parties.

These settings make it possible to strengthen dialogue among economic, monetary, and supervisory authorities, as well as to contribute to the monitoring of issues of common interest for financial stability and the development of financial services in the region.

The BCRA’s participation is articulated, among other settings, through the Meeting of Ministers of Economy and Governors of Central Banks, the Macroeconomic Monitoring Group (GMM), and Working Subgroup No. 4 “Financial Affairs” (SGT No. 4).

Economic coordination settings

Meeting of Ministers of Economy and Governors of Central Banks (RMEPBC)

The Governor of the BCRA participates in Mercosur’s RMEPBC.

The meeting is held prior to the Mercosur Summit and enables the economic and monetary authorities of the States Parties to exchange perspectives on developments in the global economy and the situation in their respective countries. It also constitutes a setting to assess joint actions aimed at boosting economic activity, strengthening regional coordination, and expanding trade within the bloc.

Macroeconomic Monitoring Group (GMM)

The BCRA participates in the GMM, made up of experts from the Central Banks and Ministries of Economy of the States Parties. The GMM works on the preparation and harmonization of regional economic statistics to facilitate their comparison and contribute to dialogue and macroeconomic coordination among the participating countries.

Financial Mercosur

The BCRA participates in Mercosur’s Working Subgroup No. 4 “Financial Affairs” (SGT-4), a technical forum made up of representatives of the central banks and of the bodies responsible for the regulation and supervision of financial services in the States Parties. The objective of SGT-4 is to deepen regional financial integration and move toward the establishment of a common market for financial services.

Within SGT-4, the BCRA participates in the following technical forums that comprise it: National Coordination, Banking System Commission, Banking System Financial Statements Presentation Commission, Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Commission, and the Cross-Border Payment Systems Commission. Also part of SGT-4 are the Insurance Commission and the Securities Commission, whose representatives are from the National Superintendency of Insurance and the National Securities Commission, respectively.
