Monthly report that analyzes the state and evolution of retail means of payment.

 

Summary

 

The month of analysis is December 2025 except for withdrawals, credit cards, debit cards and transport cards that the information corresponds to November 2025 (latest available data), prepaid cards corresponds to September 2025.

In December, remittances in pesos (immediate “push” transfers) reported a growth in amounts of 24.8% YoY.
– In pesos: 753 million transactions were registered for $ 88.7 billion, which imply year-on-year increases of 24.8% and 24.4% in amounts and in real amounts, respectively. 75% of the transactions had a CVU as their origin and/or destination.
– In foreign currency: 2.1 million operations were registered (9% YoY) for USD 3,638.6 million (13.9% YoY in currency of origin).

Income of money in pesos (“pull” immediate transfers) reached 47.7 million operations in December.
– 47.7 million transfers were made for $4.6 trillion, representing year-on-year increases of 2.8% in amounts and 10.3% in real amounts.

Payments with transfer (PCT) interoperable through the QR totaled 95 million transactions in pesos.
– 96.4 million PCT operations were carried out (44% YoY) in pesos, for a total of $2.2 trillion (47.5% YoY in real terms).
o QR: 98.6% of PCTs were initiated with QR codes, representing 95 million payments (51.9% YoY) for $2.2 trillion (57.9% YoY in real terms). 54.5% were made by customers who used their demand accounts (CBU) and 45.5% in their payment accounts (CVU). On the other hand, in stores, 54% of the transactions were credited to payment accounts, while the remaining
46% were channeled to demand accounts.
Currently, 84 interoperable digital wallets and 60 PCT acceptors are registered with the BCRA.
o With random keys: 1.4% used a token for the start of PCTs; These are 1.3 million operations (-69.2% YoY) for $48.5 billion (-62.9% YoY in real terms).

Payment accounts and funds invested through PSPCPs
In November, out of a total of 66.4 million payment accounts, 15 million had a balance for a total of $ 0.6 billion pesos. For its part, the balances invested in FCI of money reached $ 6.2 trillion in the same month. Considered together, both concepts represented 6.6% of the total deposits in pesos of the private sector. A total of 208 PSPCPs are currently included in the Register of Payment Service Providers.

Direct
debitIn December, 12.2 million direct debits were made (-1.3% YoY) for a total of $1.8 trillion (12.9% YoY in real terms). The effectiveness rate reached 43.2%.

Checks. 82.2% of the amounts cleared in December corresponded to ECHEQ.
– 5.4 million checks (physical and electronic in pesos) were cleared for a total of $22.4 billion. ECHEQ’s share of the total number of cleared persons reached 60% in quantities (3.2 million electronic checks) and 82.2% in amounts ($18.4 billion).
– Likewise, since the implementation of the ECHEQ in dollars, in December 19 checks were cleared for a total amount of USD 0.8 million.
– Rejections for reasons of “insufficient funds”: the ratio with the total compensated reached 2.2% in quantities and 1.6% in amounts.

Cards. The use of credit cards surpassed debit cards.
– Debit: 174 million transactions were made for $4.7 trillion pesos in November (latest available data), with decreases of 12% YoY in amounts and 14.2% YoY in real amounts. Likewise, in November, 10.2 thousand transactions were made in foreign currency for USD 6 million, 99.2% were processed through the e-commerce channel.
– Credit: year-on-year variations of 4.2% in amounts and -3.5% in real amounts were observed, making 184.7 million payments for $ 10.4 trillion. The most used channels were e-commerce with 39.2% of the total amount, POS and QR with 37.9% of the total and automatic debit with 13.4%.

Interoperable QR reached 4.2% of all credit cards. For its part, the one-payment modality represented 90% in amounts and 74.3% in amounts of the total credit card operations.

Transport
– Prepaid transport cards:
311 million trips were made (-16.4% YoY) through the SUBE card in October, totalling $0.137 trillion (a drop of 13.9% YoY in real terms).
– QR trips: 21.5 million trips were made in December, totaling $20.2 billion, mainly registered in buses (19.4 million, 90.4% of the total) and in the different subway lines of CABA (2.1 million, 9.6%).

Electronic Invoicing for MSMEs (FCEM)
In the month of analysis, 86.2% of the operations were carried out in pesos, entering the open circulation system (SCA) 75 thousand invoices for $ 1.5 billion.

Extractions
90% of withdrawals were made from ATMs.
– ATMs: in November (latest available data) 45.6 million withdrawals were made from the 17,440 available ATMs for a total of $3.8 billion, with approximately 2,618 being the average number of withdrawals at each ATM in the month. The average withdrawal amount reached $84.1 thousand.
– Extrabank debit cards 3.4 million withdrawals for $0.2 billion, with an average amount of $61.6 thousand.
– Extrabank withdrawals from intra PSPCP (“closed loop”) payment accounts: 2 million withdrawals for $0.1 billion, with an average amount of $56.8 thousand.
