As part of the 13th edition of the Ibero-American Series of Commemorative Coins, whose theme this year is Ibero-American Capital Cities, the BCRA launches a coin depicting the Women’s Bridge (Puente de la Mujer), which is considered an icon of the City of Buenos Aires.
The Women’s Bridge, located at Dock 3 of Puerto Madero and inaugurated in December 2001, has been one of the most significant icons of the city. The bridge, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, evokes a couple dancing tango. The rotation of the bridge on its axis simulates the synchronized turn of dancers and allows the passage of large vessels, despite the bridge’s weight of 800 tons.
The BCRA issued 2,500 commemorative coins. The coin is made of silver 925, has a face value of ARS25, a diameter of 33 mm and a reeded edge, and weighs 13.5 g. It is presented in an acrylic capsule and includes a certificate of authenticity and a case.
The Ibero-American Series of Commemorative Coins arises from a joint initiative between Spain, Portugal and several countries in the region with the aim of strengthening ties and enhancing the cultural diversity of each nation, as reflected in the designs of the coins.
