They kickstart a new line of research that focuses on topics related to the purpose and functions of the BCRA.

Six projects have already been selected from the 2022-2023 Targeted Research Projects (Proyectos de Investigación Orientada, PIO), the first joint call launched by the BCRA and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, CONICET). They kickstart a new line of research that focuses on topics related to the purpose and functions of the BCRA.

The PIO will last two years. The results of the research will be published in the Ensayos Económicos (Economic Essays) journal of the BCRA.

An ad hoc commission made up of BCRA and CONICET members—with federal representation and gender equality—was responsible for assessing the projects. The potential for transfer and the creation of multidisciplinary teams were valued.

This first job carried out by the CONICET and the BCRA jointly is in line with the different academic activities launched by the BCRA with a view to boosting the development and outreach of research on monetary, macroeconomic, financial, and banking issues in Argentina.

The six selected Targeted Research Projects are the following:

– Flujos financieros del sector corporativo no financiero en América Latina (Financial flows from the non-financial corporate sector in Latin America). An enterprise-based analysis of their actual and financial implications, headed by Rodrigo Pérez Artica.

– Endeudamiento de los hogares: un análisis con perspectiva de género y diversidad (Households’ indebtedness: a gender- and diversity- based analysis), led by Verónica Gago.

– Endeudamiento de firmas y sistema bancario: determinantes de financiamiento y análisis estructural con redes complejas (Companies’ indebtedness and banking system: financing determinants and structural analysis with complex networks), led by Gabriel Montes Rojas.

– Estrategias de ingresos y financiamiento de los hogares: impactos del COVID-19 durante y después de la pandemia (Household income and financing strategies: impact of COVID-19 during and after the pandemic), led by Pedro Moncarz.

– Financiamiento multilateral de iniciativas de transición energética (Multilateral financing of energy transition initiatives). Magnitud, normativa y condicionalidades en clave comparada (Multilateral financing of energy transition initiatives. Significance, regulation and conditionalities in comparative key), led by Andrea Molinari.

– Las prácticas monetarias de los argentinos y argentinas: entre la persistencia del efectivo y la expansión de los medios de pago electrónicos. Mapeo y análisis de tendencias contrapuestas (Argentinian monetary practices: the persistence of cash and the expansion of electronic means of payment. Mapping and analysis of opposing trends), led by Ariel Wilkis.
