The Governor of the BCRA, Miguel Ángel Pesce, announced the winning papers of the “Dr. Raúl Prebisch” Economic Research Annual Award in a virtual ceremony. The members of the Board as well as the members of the jury and the authors of the winning papers took part in this event.
Pesce gave the opening speech and pointed out the strong commitment of the BCRA to scientific progress through initiatives such as the economic essays journal called Ensayos Económicos and the Money and Banking Conference. In turn, he highlighted the need to develop methods that ensure that economists discuss facts rather than speculations.
Sergio Woyecheszen, Deputy Governor of the BCRA and member of the jury, said: “Even though there remains disagreement between different schools of economic thought, they all need to start from stylized facts, which is the best way to begin to address the issues concerning Argentina’s process of economic growth, development, employment creation and income distribution.”
During the event, Jorge Carrera, Alternate Deputy Governor and member of the jury, highlighted the diversity of approaches in the papers received and invited the authors to make recommendations and offer advice. “We are very proud of the job we did in the evaluation of papers. It inspires us to renew our dedication and commitment to this Award,” Carrera said.
Margarita Olivera and Andrea Molinari, other members of the jury, pointed out the stimulating exercise of reading, analyzing and reflecting on the papers submitted.
The Prebisch Award is an initiative of the Economic Research Deputy General Management Office of the BCRA led by Germán Feldman, and was successfully reinstated in 2020. Feldman underscored the high quality of the 36 papers submitted from all over Argentina and encouraged all participants to continue their academic careers. Moreover, he said that the BCRA will consider various papers for publication in the journal called Ensayos Económicos.
At the end of the ceremony, the winners of each category shared the main conclusions of their papers with the authorities of the BCRA and the members of the jury.
