HISTORICAL AND NUMISMATIC MUSEUM
“HÉCTOR CARLOS JANSON”

In our country we have multiple words to refer to money: guita, mosca, mango, gamba, palo, luca, tela, morlacos, chirolas.

Do you know where the meaning of “I don’t have a copper” or “it costs only a few chirolas” comes from? We invite you to visit the Central Bank Museum to discover more.

In the Museum you will be able to learn about the history of the Argentine currency and all the means of payment that circulated in this territory, from the native peoples to the present day.

The Museum has the most valuable and complete public collection of banknotes, Argentine coins and objects in the country, totaling more than 27,000 pieces.

Its current headquarters was declared a National Historic Monument in 2005. Located a few meters from the Plaza de Mayo, it was designed by the architects Enrique Hunt and Juan Schröder, in 1862, for the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. It was then occupied by the Caja de Conversion, the National Public Credit Office and the Industrial Bank successively, until in 1942 it was ceded to the Central Bank.
