Cancelling cheque

Verify the validity of the data on a cancelling check and confirm that it does not register an impediment to payment before accepting, endorsing it, depositing it or presenting it for collection.

What is a cancelling cheque?

The cancelling cheque is an instrument created to replace the use of cash in transactions between individuals. The cancelling check is issued by the Central Bank and delivered to the banks on consignment, it can be issued in pesos or in US dollars (the latter, for real estate transactions).

When to use this query?

Use this query to:

– Corroborate that the data on the check matches the BCRA registry.
– Verify that the check is not prevented from payment.
– Reduce errors when filling in data before depositing or collecting.

Required data

Have the cancellation check at hand and complete:

– Serial number and check number (as listed on the document).
– Issuing entity.
– MEP transaction number and buyer data.
– Currency and amount.
– Beneficiary identification (if the check includes 2 beneficiaries, enter both).

Deadlines and endorsements

– Present the check for collection at the entity where the holder has an account within 90 calendar days from its issuance; once that period has expired, it must be submitted to the BCRA.
– The check can be endorsed up to two times. Endorsements must be made on the back of the document and with a signature certification (notary, financial institution official or judicial authority). The second endorsement can only be made by a natural person.

What do the results mean?

– Valid / unimpeded data: continue with the usual deposit or collection circuit at the corresponding entity.
– Data does not match: check the load (serial number, check number, transaction, CUIT/CUIL/CDI, currency and amount).
– With impediment to payment or observations: consult the financial institution involved before moving forward.

Important

The Central Bank regulates and supervises the financial system and does not provide banking services to the public. For collection or deposit operations, channel the query through the financial institution.
