Retail Payments Report

Monthly report that analyzes the state and evolution of retail means of payment.

The month of analysis is January 2026 except for withdrawals, credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards and transport cards that the information corresponds to December 2025 (latest data available).

In January, remittances in pesos (immediate “push” transfers) saw a growth in amounts of 24.2% y.o.y.

− In pesos: 675.9 million transactions were registered for $81.2 billion, implying year-on-year increases of 24.2% and 19% in amounts and real amounts, respectively. 76.2% of the transactions had a CVU as their origin and/or destination.
− In foreign currency: 2.4 million operations were registered (4.7% YoY) for USD 3,420.7 million (-2.4% YoY in currency of origin).

Money inflows in pesos (“pull” immediate transfers) reached 40.2 million operations in January.

− 40.2 million transfers were made for $3.8 trillion, representing year-on-year increases of 4.3% in amounts and 12.5% in real amounts.

Payments with transfer (PCT) interoperable through the QR totaled 92.1 million transactions in pesos.

− 93.3 million PCT operations were carried out (48.1% YoY) in pesos, for a total of $2.1 trillion (51.8% YoY in real terms).

o QR: 98.8% of PCTs were started with QR codes, representing 92.1 million payments (53% YoY) for $2.1 trillion (57.3% YoY in real terms). 53.1% were made by customers who used their demand accounts (CBU) and 46.9% in their payment accounts (CVU). On the other hand, in shops, 54.3% of transactions were credited to payment accounts, while the remaining 45.7% were channelled to demand accounts.

Currently, 86 interoperable digital wallets and 61 PCT acceptors are registered with the BCRA.

o With random keys: 1.2% used a token for the start of PCTs; These are 1.1 million operations (-58.7% YoY) for $36.5 billion (-50.3% YoY in real terms).

Payment accounts and funds invested through PSPCPs

In December, out of a total of 68.7 million payment accounts, 15 million had a balance totaling $0.8 trillion pesos. For its part, the balances invested in FCI of money reached $ 7.4 trillion in the same month. Considered together, both concepts represented 7.4% of the total deposits in pesos of the private sector. A total of 215 PSPCPs are currently included in the Register of Payment Service Providers.

Direct debit

In January, 11.3 million direct debits were made (-7.6% YoY) for a total of $1.8 trillion (-0.2% YoY in real terms). The effectiveness rate reached 43.6%.

Checks. 82.8% of the amounts compensated in December corresponded to ECHEQ

− Almost 5 million checks (physical and electronic in pesos) were cleared for a total of $ 21.7 billion. ECHEQ’s share of the total number of cleared persons reached 60.4% in quantities (3 million electronic checks) and 82.8% in amounts ($17.9 billion).
− Likewise, given the recent implementation of the ECHEQ in dollars, 24 checks were cleared in January for a total amount of USD 3.9 million.
− Rejections for reasons of “insufficient funds”: the ratio to the total number of compensated reached 2.1% in amounts and 1.4% in amounts, reducing compared to December 2025.

Cards. The use of credit cards surpassed debit cards.

Debit: 162.8 million transactions were made for $4.9 trillion pesos in December (latest available data), with decreases of 28.4% YoY in amounts and 30.1% YoY in real amounts. Likewise, in December, 9.7 thousand transactions were made in foreign currency for USD 6.1 million (98.9% were processed through the e-commerce channel).

Credit: year-on-year variations of -1.8% in amounts and -7.9% in real amounts were observed, with 181.6 million payments being made for $10.6 trillion. The most used channels were POS and QR with 38.8%, e-commerce with 37.6% and automatic debit with 14% in quantities.

The interoperable QR reached 5% of the total number of credit cards, in quantities. For its part, the one-payment modality represented 85.1% in amounts and 61.8% in amounts of the total operations.

Prepaid: in December, 43.5 million payments were made for $ 0.7 trillion, which represents variations of 16.2% and -20.2% y.a., in real amounts and amounts respectively.

Transportation

Prepaid transport cards: nearly 305 million trips were made (-14.4% YoY) using the SUBE card in December, totaling $0.157 trillion (a drop of 7.1% YoY in real terms).
QR trips: 15.9 million trips were made in January, totaling $16.2 billion, mainly on buses (14.7 million, 92.4% of the total) and on the different subway lines (1.2 million, 7.6%).

Electronic Invoicing for MSMEs (FCEM)

In the month of analysis, 85.7% of the operations were carried out in pesos, entering the open circulation system (SCA) 72 thousand invoices for $ 1.5 billion.

Extractions

89% of withdrawals were made from ATMs.

ATMs: in December (latest available data) 55.5 million withdrawals were made from the 17,275 available ATMs for a total of $ 5.3 billion, with approximately 3,212 being the average number of withdrawals at each ATM in the month. The average withdrawal amount reached $95.5k.
Extrabank debit cards: 4.1 million withdrawals for $0.3 billion, with an average amount of $66.6 thousand.
Extrabank withdrawals from intra-PSPCP (“closed loop“) payment accounts: 2.4 million withdrawals for $0.14 billion, with an average amount of $61 thousand.
