The main design depicts the iconic second goal against England in Mexico in 1986, widely regarded as the greatest goal in World Cup history.

The BCRA issued a silver commemorative coin dedicated to the FIFA World Cup 2026™, featuring a depiction of the legendary, Argentine second goal against England in Mexico in 1986, widely regarded as the greatest goal in World Cup history. In 2026, forty years will have passed since that historic sporting milestone.

This issuance is part of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Program. The BCRA previously minted commemorative coins within the framework of the program for the Germany World Cup (2006), South Africa World Cup (2010), Brazil World Cup (2014), Russia World Cup (2018), and Qatar World Cup—Argentina becoming the world champion—(2022). Thus, the new commemorative coin for the World Cup 2026 is now joining earlier issuances. For the first time, the World Cup will be co-hosted by three countries: United States, Canada and Mexico.

Main features of the coin

This commemorative coin features a large ball in the center of the obverse, as a symbol of Argentinians’ passion for football. The upper arch reads REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA (ARGENTINE REPUBLIC), and the lower one reads COPA MUNDIAL DE LA FIFA 2026TM (FIFA World Cup 2026™). The reverse depicts the iconic goal scored in 1986, showing the brilliant play: the path to the goal and the opponents he skillfully dodged before scoring. The symbolic face value of ARS10 appears in the center circle of the field on the reverse, and the year of minting, 2025, is shown in the exergue. The upper arch reads BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA (CENTRAL BANK OF ARGENTINA), and the lower arch, COPA MUNDIAL DE LA FIFA 2026™ (FIFA World Cup 2026).

The coin is made of silver 925. It has a reeded edge with a diameter of 40 mm, and weighs 27 grams. The issuance for the domestic market consists of 2,500 units. Additionally, gold coins with a similar design were minted for the international market.

The BCRA’s Treasury Strategic Planning Management Office—Numismatic Issuances Deputy Management Office—was in charge of the design, and the coins were minted by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Spanish Mint).
