The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) decided to extend the entire calendar for the exit of 5-peso banknotes from circulation by one month. Therefore, until February 29, these banknotes can continue to be used in all businesses and shops in the country for any transaction.
The measure adopted by the Board of Directors, through Communication A6877, aims to facilitate the commercial operations of all actors in the financial system. This modification will allow time until March 31 to deposit the banknotes in accounts or exchange them in the country’s bank branches.
All banks, public or private, are obliged to accept them.
New schedule:
Until February 29, it can be used for any transaction in all businesses and shops in the country.
Until March 31, banks must exchange the 5-peso bills or credit them to accounts. You can put several together and exchange them for larger denomination bills.
Currently, the 5-peso bill coexists with the currency of the same value. This coin, silver-colored with the representation of the myrtle, will definitively replace the banknote.
As it is the smallest denomination bill, the 5-peso paper deteriorates faster than the rest of the bills. There are currently 459.6 million units of this banknote with the image of General José de San Martín on its obverse, which was issued from 1998. Since August 1, 2019, more than 50 million banknotes have already been withdrawn from circulation.
