The introduction of ARS10,000 and ARS20,000 banknotes will reduce costs, streamline logistics and make transactions easier.

The BCRA will put into circulation ARS10,000 and ARS20,000 banknotes. The issuance of these denominations will make transactions easier among users, streamline logistics of the financial system, and reduce the acquisition costs of finished banknotes. In order to save costs and shorten production times, the Board of the BCRA decided to use existing designs that are part of the new “Heroines and Heroes of the Nation” series for the new banknotes.

The ARS10,000 bank note will show the portrait of Manuel Belgrano and María Remedios del Valle, heroine of the War of Independence, on the obverse. The portrait of Belgrano is attributed to the French artist François Casimir Carbonnier. The one of the heroine belongs to the work “La Capitana” (The Captain) by the Argentine artist Gisela Banzer. The reverse will show, as the main design, the artistic recreation of the Swearing in of the Flag on February 27, 1812.

The portrait of Juan Bautista Alberdi will be displayed on the obverse of the ARS20,000 banknote. He was an inspiring figure for the National Constitution of 1853. The reverse will show the recreation of the house where the lawyer, diplomat, economist, writer, philosopher, journalist and politician was born.

The new series will have the same size as the current banknotes, and will be printed on cotton paper, with the traditional security features such as the watermark and the security thread. Moreover, special printing systems will incorporate security elements that will be mainly for the general public and machine recognition.

The BCRA expects new banknotes to be available to the public as from June 2024.
