The ARS200 southern right whale banknote, presented on October 26, 2016, won the first LatiNum prize for the best Latin American banknote awarded by the Buenos Aires Numismatic Center. The second place in that category went to Colombia’s COP50,000 banknote, and the third place to Mexico’s MXN100 banknote. In addition, the ARS2 coin issued on July 7, 2016, in commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Argentine Declaration of Independence won the third prize in the “Best Circulation Coin” category.
The results were announced at the 3rd edition of the LatiNum Awards ceremony, held on October 6 at the Astor Piazzolla auditorium of the Representative Office of the Province of Buenos Aires. In addition to Argentina, this edition included banknotes and coins from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela issued between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.
The LatiNum awards recognize the design quality, technological innovation and other features of banknotes and coins issued in Latin America. The contest is organized by the Buenos Aires Numismatic Center, a non-profit civil and cultural institution dedicated to the promotion of numismatic science.
In 2016, the ARS500 banknote, featuring the jaguar, received the “Best Latin American Banknote” award. In addition, it was selected as one of the top four banknotes in the world by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS). The award acknowledged artistic merit, design, use of color and security features.
