The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) provided through Communication A6742 that the 5-peso banknotes will be taken out of circulation in February 2020. Until January 31, 2020, they can be used in all businesses and shops in the country for any transaction. Likewise, from August 1 of this year until February 28 of next year, financial institutions must receive the 5-peso bills for exchange or crediting to accounts.

Schedule:

– From August 1, 2019 , the withdrawal of banknotes from circulation begins.

– Until January 31, 2020 , it can be used in all businesses and merchants in the country for any transaction.

– As of February 1, 2020 , it ceases to have canceling power.

– Until February 28, 2020 , financial institutions must redeem them or credit them to accounts.

Currently, the 5-peso bill coexists with the currency of the same value. This coin, silver-colored that has the myrtle as the protagonist, will definitively replace the banknote.

As it is the smallest denomination bill, the 5-peso paper deteriorates faster than the rest of the bills. Currently, 510.6 million units of this banknote circulate, with the image of General José de San Martín on its obverse, which was issued from 1998.

In 2017, the BCRA began a program to destroy damaged banknotes, as part of its plan to improve the quality of circulating money. In May 2018, the 2-peso bill was taken out of circulation.

The BCRA continues to provide coins through the channels enabled to financial institutions, as well as to companies or business associations that are interested, which may contact operaciones.monedas@bcra.gob.ar for more information.
