Bicentennial Birth of General J. J. de Urquiza

BCRA - Commemorative Coin 40 years of Democracy
Justo José de Urquiza was born on October 18, 1801, in an estancia near Concepción del Uruguay (Entre Ríos), he spent his childhood and adolescence in the countryside, familiar with the tasks of the farmer and the cattle rancher.

From 1819 until his death he lived in Concepción del Uruguay, where he dedicated himself to mercantile activity, at the same time that he was attracted by politics. A spokesman for federalism, he went through the entire scale of institutional positions: deputy, departmental commander, governor of Entre Ríos and first constitutional president of the Argentine Confederation.

In his eagerness to organize the nation, on May 1, 1851, he accepted the resignation of Juan Manuel de Rosas from the leadership of foreign relations, and resumed the autonomy of his province. In 1853 he promulgated the National Constitution and fought for the union of the Argentine people, promoting well-being and progress.

This Bank adheres to these developments with the issuance of a “Circulation” quality coin and a “Brilliant Uncirculated” quality gold coin.

Part of the pieces minted in circulation quality, 5,000, are presented in cardboard cases with a brief biography and characteristics of the issue. The coins included in this type of case have a particularity, in this case they have a smooth edge, on the other hand, those that are presented in loose, grooved edge.
