The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was established in 1946 during the first session of the United Nations General Assembly, thus becoming the United Nations emergency fund for children, in response to the devastating consequences of the 2nd. World War.

Fifty years after its creation, this important event is commemorated with the issuance of two circulation coins with values of $1 (one PESO) and $0.50 (fifty cents), both with characteristics similar to those currently in progress.

The main imprint consists of the image of a girl playing with a rag doll. In the upper arch, it presents the legend “REPUBLICA ARGENTINA” and, in the lower, “IN UNION AND FREEDOM”.

In the central area, at the top, the UNICEF isotype, and on its sides the years “1946” and “1996”. Below the isotype, the number “50” supported by the word “CENTAVOS”. In the upper arch, the legend “UNICEF FIFTY YEARS WITH CHILDREN” and in the exergue “1996”; on both sides five faces of boys and girls representing different peoples and races arranged alternately, each of them symbolizes five years of UNICEF action. The axis of rotation of the coin is vertical (reverse medal).
