100th Anniversary of the Birth of Jorge Luis Borges
On August 24, 1899, the eminent Argentine poet and writer, Jorge Luis Borges, was born in the city of Buenos Aires. His sublime literary quality made him a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature and winner of numerous international awards. The continuous publication of books about his work and his personality are indications of the perenniality of his fame.
One hundred years after its birth, the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic commemorates such a unique event through a numismatic issue in three types of alloys: Gold and Silver in proof quality and Cupronickel in circulation quality.
The presentations were made as follows: vélvetex cases with a gold and a silver coin, and individual cases for each proof alloy, all including the corresponding certificates of authenticity.
Cardboard cases were also made with the circulation coin, a brief biography of the writer and specifications of the piece minted in his commemoration. 5,000 cases numbered from 1 to 5,000 were made.
