Tribute to democracy in the Night of Museums

The “Héctor Carlos Janson” Numismatic and Historical Museum, will join the 2023 edition of The Night of Museums with an exhibition about the 40 years that have elapsed after the return of democracy in December 1983. The event will take place next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The restauration work on the façade of the building that housed the BCRA’s first headquarters will also be exhibited.

The historical and numismatic exhibition, which will be located in the central hall of the Museum, revolves around three thematic topics: the end of the civic-military dictatorship, the presidential elections on December 10, 1983, and the subsequent cultural and social changes.

The exhibition displays representative numismatic pieces such as the one million pesos Ley 18.188 banknote, the Argentine peso featuring the portrait of Juan Bautista Alberdi, and australes banknotes holding the portrait of constitutional presidents. The museum will further display special commemorative issues such as the coins for the 25th Anniversary of the Malvinas Islands Deed and those related to Advocacy of Human Rights. A guided tour in Argentine Sign Language will also be available at 7:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The museum will be specially illuminated so that visitors may fully enjoy the restauration work on the façade of the BCRA’s first headquarters, and the exhibition about the 40 years that have elapsed after the return of democracy, together with the permanent exhibition.

The building located at San Martín 275 was restored by a team of the BCRA’s Infrastructure Management Office in cooperation with experts in restoration, sculpture and conservation of historical buildings.

The BCRA's Museum will also display its permanent exhibition, which tells the history of Argentina following the tracks of the banknotes and coins that have circulated in our territory over time.
