The BCRA Took Another Step Towards the Full Interoperability of QR Payments

The BCRA, through Communication A 8032, established that all registered e-wallets—provided by both banks and payment service providers—that allow payments on credit and/or prepaid cards using QR codes must be interoperable. This represents an important improvement in the payment experience for stores and consumers.

It is a decisive step towards full interoperability in means of payment. The milestone of the process initiated and encouraged by the BCRA was the implementation of the interoperable QR codes to collect payments with credit cards. After being postponed, this process finally became effective on April 30, 2024.

As a result of the hard work and cooperation of all relevant players, it was possible to continue building an open, competitive and interoperable digital payment ecosystem that promotes greater financial inclusion and streamlines the experience of more than 36 million financial consumers.

The BCRA established the guidelines and set an implementation deadline, allowing players in the electronic payment ecosystem to work on process implementation to ensure operational readiness.
