Promoting Financial Transparency: the BCRA Launches the Foreign Exchange Statistics API

The BCRA makes available the Application Programming Interface (API) of Foreign Exchange Statistics, which provides easy access to foreign exchange rates.

This new API is the third one in a series of public and free interfaces, which facilitate interaction between programs and applications. The other APIs made available by the BCRA include those of Main Variables and Reported Checks, launched in April and June, respectively.

APIs are innovative technological tools that improve information quality. They significantly contribute to efficiency and accessibility, strengthening transparency and security in financial transactions in Argentina. The dynamic and streamlined interaction with the BCRA's databases reduces both the costs and time associated with queries made by market participants.

The new Foreign Exchange Statistics API facilitates the following queries:

Foreign exchange rates: it provides access to the list of foreign exchange rates on a specific date as published by the BCRA. This ensures up-to-date and accurate information for users.

Evolution of exchange rates: it provides information on the evolution of a specific foreign exchange rate (using ISO currency codes) in a given date range for those interested in the analysis of historical series.

Access to ISO currency codes: it provides a full list of all existing ISO currency codes—including their official name—thus simplifying their identification through the international standard.

The BCRA will continue to expand the APIs’ catalog. The next API will be the Debtor’s Database API, which will be made available during the third quarter of 2024.

The launch of APIs is part of the BCRA’s Open Finance strategy, which seeks to improve the flow of information in the financial system to promote inclusion and transparency.
