Human rights are inherent to all human beings, whatever their sex, race, age, religion, political party or social, cultural or economic status.
During the state terrorism of 1976-1983, thousands of people were detained or “disappeared” in Argentina under the military regime.
Hundreds of children were taken away from their mothers, and many of them were born in captivity and deprived of the right to preserve their actual identity. These events were a flagrant violation of human rights.
In 1976, a small group of mothers and grandmothers wearing white headscarves decided to speak out to the world in search of their disappeared children and grandchildren. From them on, many human rights organizations reported crimes against humanity. However, the headscarf has become the symbol of their fight.
This series of commemorative coins—in cupronickel for circulation, and in gold and silver of “proof” quality—pays homage to both the victims of this genocide and all those who have shown commitment, effort and hope in search of MEMORY, TRUTH and JUSTICE since thirty years ago.
Out of the total pieces coined for circulation, 5,000 units have a plain edge, each of which is delivered within a case together with a short historical summary and the features of this issuance.
The center shows an image of the headscarf, the symbol of Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. The legend “DERECHOS HUMANOS” (“HUMAN RIGHTS”) is arranged to form the upper arch, and “MEMORIA, VERDAD Y JUSTICIA” (“MEMORY, TRUTH AND JUSTICE”) shapes the lower arch.
The upper part reads “REPUBLICA ARGENTINA” (“ARGENTINE REPUBLIC”), then the face value “1” and the word “PESO”. The exergue reads the year of coinage—“2006”.
