The Money and Banking Conference of the BCRA Is Back

The 2020 Money and Banking Conference of the BCRA (2020 MBC) will be held throughout November. Within the framework of the 85th anniversary of the BCRA, this year’s Conference, named Central Banks´ Challenges, Objectives and Instruments in the New Global Context, will be held virtually due to the pandemic.

After three years of the last edition, the Money and Banking Conference is back with a program that promotes discussion and critical thought. The Conference will be highlighted by renowned speakers like Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize winner in Economics, and Alicia Bárcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The BCRA’s President, Miguel Ángel Pesce, and the Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, will also take part in the Conference.

The 2020 MBC will consist of four discussion panels to take place on November 4, 11, 18 and 25. The topics will revolve around the following titles: The Monetary Policy Role in the in the Aftermath of the Pandemic, from Theory to Practice; The Central Banks´ Challenges and Perspectives in Latin American Economies and Other Emerging Countries; The Macroeconomic Policies in the COVID-19 Pandemic; and last, the closing panel will deal with The Challenges and Perspectives in a New Global Context.

The Conference will be given by Alicia Bárcena, Daniela Gabor, Jan Kregel, Marc Lavoie, Cristina Marcuzzo, Perry Mehrling, Daniela Prates, Hyun Song Shin, José Darío Uribe, L. Randall Wray, and, to close the Conference, Joseph Stiglitz, Miguel Ángel Pesce, and Martín Guzmán. The Economic Research Deputy General Management Office of the BCRA led by Germán Feldman, Economic Research Deputy General Manager, has been responsible for the organization

This edition will be broadcast virtually, openly and for free, thereby favoring presentations’ greater reach for interested people from all over the country and the region as well. According to the program, presentations will be uploaded to the website every day and will remain available at the platform for the public to have access at any time.

The 2020 MBC is part of a strategy to recover the BCRA´s academic profile, an active policy followed throughout the year which aims to resume significant programs and activities, such as “Dr. Raúl Prebisch” Economic Research Annual Award, the journal called Ensayos Económicos (Economic Essays), and the new blog called Central de Ideas.

In this regard, the 2020 MBC seeks to stimulate discussion on macroeconomic, monetary and financial topics in front of a wide audience, such as professional and academic economists, policymakers, and students of economics. The 2020 MBC has a digital platform that gathers relevant information (program and speakers´ bios and topics) so that people may have access to the different discussion panels.
