In February 2020, ARS5 Banknotes will be Removed from Circulation

July 26, 2019. Under Communication A6742, the BCRA ordered that ARS5 banknotes will be removed from circulation in February 2020. They can be used in all shops in Argentina until January 31, 2020. Likewise, from August 1, 2019 to February 28, 2020 financial institutions must exchange ARS5 banknotes or credit the holder's account.

Schedule:

- As from August 1, 2019 banknotes will be removed from circulation.

- Until January 31, 2020 they can be used in all shops in Argentina.

- As from February 1, 2020 they will no longer have legal tender status.

- Until February 28, 2020 financial institutions must exchange them or credit the holder's account.

At present, the ARS5 banknote circulates along with the coin with the same face value. The ARS5 banknote will definitely be replaced by a silver-colored coin that features a myrtle tree.

As the banknote of the lowest denomination, the ARS5 paper is damaged more quickly than the rest of the banknotes. The ARS5 banknotes featuring General José de San Martín on the obverse started to be issued in 1998. Now there are 510.6 million in circulation.

In 2017, the BCRA launched a destruction program of worn-out banknotes, as part of a plan to improve the quality of money in circulation. In May 2018, the ARS2 banknote was removed from circulation.
